Our new theme in Picturing Writing is weather. We have talked about rain and now we are focusing on lightning. Next up, wind. We have really come a long way since our first painting. I thought this mountain landscape was so unique! We have all become such great artists.

We had a great week! We have been working hard learning different strategies to solve addition. We have really come a long way. We took our Chapter 3 test today. I had so many students make 100%. We also got our iPad and iPods back from the ASD tech center and so we were able to start using them during our intervention time in the morning. Doing Lexia on the iPad seems to be more fun then doing it on the computer :)

We will be having an awards assembly on Friday the 15th from 2:00-2:30. I will be giving every student in my class an award. If you could make arrangements to attend I know your student would be thrilled. They have been working so hard! Also, I wanted to inform you of some changes in our homework. We are going to be implementing more vocabulary into our day. As a result we will have less time to complete unfinished work in the afternoons. Most students are able to complete the assigned in the time given but sometimes there are pages that take a little longer. I have explained our new homework policy to the students, so they understand that homework always has to come back to me to be graded. I keep record of all the assignments that are turned in each morning. One last thing, book orders are due January 22nd. If you chose to order online that is great! Our online code is PCHXK . You may also just send cash with your student and I will place the order. Either way is fine with me. There are some really great perks this month for students. If we have a total equaling $50 or more all students in the class would receive a free book coupon. If our total is $100 or more all students in the class would receive a book! *JUST A REMINDER- Monday the 15th is MLK Day we will not have school. Using Picturing Writing in our class has really made us appreciate our surroundings. We noticed the sun rising behind the mountains and had to take a moment to stop and look at the beautiful colors of sunrise. We are so luck to live in such a beautiful place. I want to make sure and take advantage of as many opportunities as I can to inspire our 1st grades in their writing and painting.
Today during math we practiced telling time. We currently know how to tell time to the half hour and hour. The kids are really great at using the clocks. The catch on so fast and are so eager to tell time. Speaking of time it has flown by. I can't believe this is our last week before winter break. We will be having a "Polar Express" party on Thursday. I will be providing hot chocolate with all the toppings/add ins. If you would like to provide snack that is fine with me. We currently have 17 students. Also, we have been practicing for Winter Fest for months. It starts at 1:30 on Thursday. Hope to see you all there.
Mr. Page and I had a great time at Literacy Night. We hosted BINGO in my classroom! It was great seeing our students that came. Wendy's donated chili that was delicious and Carlile somehow got this reindeer and elf to stop by and take pictures. How exciting! I can't wait until our next family night.
Today during math we used square tiles to measure a variety of things. The kids really respond well when they are able to get up and move around a bit. It is also a great change for me. I love it when I can just explain and let them discover on their own. I believe it really gives them a sense of ownership when it comes to their education as well as confidence.
Thanksgiving break is almost here and I cannot believe it. We have been having such a great time the days have just flown by. We will be having a small classroom party on our last day before break. Students are welcome to bring healthy snacks to share with the entire class. We currently have 15 students. I am so extremely thankful for this class they are such a joy to teach. I hope you all have a wonderful break.
"I am thankful for teachers." "Because I like school."-Rome " I am thankful for my teacher and I love school." -Almoine "I am thankful for my family"-Keira "I am thankful for toys and school"-Ashlyn "I am thankful for a pizza sandwich"-Riek Yesterday we did our first readers theater. I wasn't sure how it would go over with the kids but they LOVED it. I had 3 different groups all reading. They were all following along, and reading with expression. They also were so mature when deciding who was going to read for all the parts. It was a great thing to see. I am so proud of this group. They are so amazing! I am one lucky teacher!
Today I introduced the kids to coding. I feel like this is going to become more and more common in their technology driven world. I believe that coding will even be a part of the new and improved Science Kit that we will be implementing next school year. Every student has an account here it is if you would like to practice at home. http://studio.code.org/sections/MTCCEL
