This week all three 3rd Grade teacher started "Walk to Read" in the afternoon. Basically, "Walk to Read' is the practice of grouping students in skill-alike groups for our W.I.N. and Reading instruction portion of the day. Usually in a Walk to Read model teachers in any particular grade level will "specialize" in a specific skill level grouping during Walk to Read and the students will "walk" to that group for targeted intervention. This way every student is getting the skills they need to be successful.

JUST KIDDING haha! These past couple of weeks have been so busy. I really hate to be absent from my class but sometimes that can't be helped. Multiple trainings and meetings caused me to be out of my classroom on a few days these past couple weeks. Change is hard on students when they are so used to the routines I have put in place. I try hard to make it as easy as possible. Above a are 2 of a handful of silly pictures I posted all over the room for my students to see when I am away. On each one I wrote something positive and motivational hoping the kids would smile and know that I was thinking about them :)
One fun class wide reward system I have is called "S'MORE POINTS". As a class we vote on a goal for the number of s'more points we need to earn before we have a s'more party aka snack. Then, throughout the week/weeks we earn points in the hallway for compliments from other teachers, or from me based on how quiet and straight our line is in the hallway. Since our classroom theme is camping, s'mores fit perfectly.
I always give students the option of choosing an alternative reward. I also, what to assure you that I have made accommodations for any food restrictions. I try to change up the s'more parties too. Sometimes it is a s'more (half sized not a whole graham cracker), trail mix, etc. One time last year we read "If You Give A Pig A Pancake" and I made s'more pancakes in the class that week :). I want them to be excited about each "party" so they stay motivated. They all really like it so far. As they year goes on our goal will continue to grow. I tell the students we can only add on to our goal we never subtract. We are keeping very busy here in 3rd Grade. We have continued working on the "Time of Day" unit in Picturing Writing. The students are really loving it and it goes along with our Science kit so I couldn't be happier. I am currently working on getting accounts on Classroom Dojo and Khan Academy as well as Remind 101. I will keep you updated as I get more familiar with these and begin to use them more in the classroom. Here is a note from my reporter...
Today it was amazing and we get COOKIES!!!!! we never got COOKES before in school :) Welcome back to school! This is going to be another great year at Mountain View. Since the building is under major construction this school year is going to be a little different. I think we are settling in to our routine pretty well. It is very different being apart from the rest of the school for most of the day in our wing and having lunch in our classrooms but I am hopeful that it will only bring us closer as a classroom community. I finally got a phone in my classroom YAY! I will be sending my classroom phone number home soon. For now the best way to contact me is through email or leaving a message with the office. I included that contact information in the purple parent foldable sent home earlier in the week.
Here is a word from one of my 3rd Graders! Today we painted and it was great! The paintings looked good. We did math it was fun learning. Recess was the best! -Tia Every student worked hard drawing and contributing to the writing of our new book. These students spent a morning at Bass Pro Shops studying and sketching the Rainbow Trout in the store’s aquarium. I am so happy that I have been able to see this group of remarkable students grow as artists and writers throughout the year. It has been my pleasure to observe and help facilitate their learning throughout this school years “Picturing Writing” lessons.
Today we learned about solids turing into liquids and what better way to explain it then making chalk. Of course when it was dry we had to go test it out!
