Today during math we used square tiles to measure a variety of things. The kids really respond well when they are able to get up and move around a bit. It is also a great change for me. I love it when I can just explain and let them discover on their own. I believe it really gives them a sense of ownership when it comes to their education as well as confidence.
Thanksgiving break is almost here and I cannot believe it. We have been having such a great time the days have just flown by. We will be having a small classroom party on our last day before break. Students are welcome to bring healthy snacks to share with the entire class. We currently have 15 students. I am so extremely thankful for this class they are such a joy to teach. I hope you all have a wonderful break.
"I am thankful for teachers." "Because I like school."-Rome " I am thankful for my teacher and I love school." -Almoine "I am thankful for my family"-Keira "I am thankful for toys and school"-Ashlyn "I am thankful for a pizza sandwich"-Riek Yesterday we did our first readers theater. I wasn't sure how it would go over with the kids but they LOVED it. I had 3 different groups all reading. They were all following along, and reading with expression. They also were so mature when deciding who was going to read for all the parts. It was a great thing to see. I am so proud of this group. They are so amazing! I am one lucky teacher!
Today I introduced the kids to coding. I feel like this is going to become more and more common in their technology driven world. I believe that coding will even be a part of the new and improved Science Kit that we will be implementing next school year. Every student has an account here it is if you would like to practice at home. http://studio.code.org/sections/MTCCEL
Here are a couple of the literacy centers we had today. One was practicing writing spelling words with our brand new smelly markers! The other was building nonsense words. Every 10 minutes the kids clean up and switch to a new center. There are 4 centers in all. We have done centers since the first day of school so these kids are pros!
MATH TIME!!!! Everyone loves math in my class which is so great. Today after our lesson we played a tens frame addition game. The tens frame looks a little complicated but after a bit of practice every one became a master! Turning a math concept that may look a little intimidating into a fun game makes all the fear and pressure just float away. I don't think I hear one child say "this is too hard". Ask your student about the math games that we play. I bet they would love to teach you, this would be a great way to practice their skills.
