This week we did a think, pair, share activity while answering some "Close Reading" questions about one of our stories this week. We worked for 3 days with the same groups. I caught this group above in the picture working really hard to quietly discuss one of the questions. I just thought it was really sweet that they were taking it so seriously. I had to try and take a quick picture without them noticing me :) Just another daily reminder of why I love teaching, especially 1st Graders!! Sometimes they completely make my day in the smallest way.
Today we got to visit Mr. Page in his brand new classroom for Reading Buddies! These 3rd and 1st graders always impress me with how well they work together. Usually, I have the 1st graders read the weekly main story to their buddy then they get to take a book of their choice. Basically a book that they can read on their own and a book they they can read but might need a little help with (that's where our buddies come in handy).
Today we did some candy heart sorting, and graphing. It is always more fun to graph things we get to eat! We also had a field trip today. We went to the Performing Arts Center to see the New Shanghai Circus. It was very cool! I am so glad the kids go to experience it. Seeing their faces in shock and awe was the best!! I sat next to one of my girls who had to cover her eyes when the tumblers were jumping through really high hoops...she was so nervous they would fall. I'm sure to them it was magical.
Again this was a action packed week. In one of the photos above you can see on of my students recording himself reading. This is a new station in our literacy centers that the kids really love. It's great because they can go back and re-read with themselves. Another plus is I can listen in too! We have moved on to our second theme in Picturing Writing, Weather. Here are the kids typing up their poems. After we brainstormed together they wrote their rough draft and then they got to type it. I have never had them type anything but their username and password into the computer so I wasn't sure how it would go but they did awesome. They really liked it so I think we will be doing more typing for sure. The last picture was of some bubble painting that we did. For "Fun Friday" we made Elephant Toothpaste (link to information below). It was a blast. We stuck with the bubble theme and made some bubble print paintings to go along with it. Another fun week in First Grade :)
Reminder: Field Trip Forms due back on Monday! Keep an eye out for conference papers. *I used regular hydrogen peroxide that you can buy at the grocery store, I believe it was 3% and it worked just fine. http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/elephants-toothpaste-kid-version/ |
