We have been working really hard to learn procedures these past few days and everyone is doing great! One thing that we have really been practicing is center time. Every morning during our intervention time we start out our day by working in different literacy centers. The pictures above show just two of the five centers in the room. The left is our "Word Work" center, students were using magnetic letter to practice building their spelling words. The right is another "Word Work" center where students were matching long vowel word families. Our other centers are "Computer Station", "Listening Center", and "Reading Table" this one is with me to work on reading skills with small groups of students. Reminder: I am starting homework today. Please help your child remember to place homework into their "Take Home" folder and then place their folder in their backpack. I bought the good plastic folders for the students and only bought 1 per student so if they loose it please send a replacement. Coming up this week: Open House/Ice Cream Social is September 3rd from 5pm-7pm. |

For the perfect end to our first week of school we partnered up with Mr. Page's 3rd Graders for some reading fun. I was so impressed with my students and Mr. Page's 3rd Graders. Everyone had such a great time and got to practice reading to others and listening to reading. I saw shy students really come out of their shell and become mentors and teachers to my 1st Graders. I can't wait to do it again next week!
Today we have officially started our Go Math! curriculum. Our unit is Two-Dimensional Geometry. Everyone had a great time getting to use their brand new workbook. Today we just focused on accessing prior knowledge. Tomorrow we will begin using attributes to sort 2-D shapes.
In reading our focus was on learning phonics/decoding strategies. We practiced by reading "My Best Friend" by Pat Hutchins. After reading we worked a little on retelling the story. Mainly looking at being able to recall events that occurred during the middle and end of the story. We continued the "best friend" theme and read "YOU WILL BE MY FRIEND!" by Peter Brown later in the day. We also read "Miss Mingo and the Fire Drill" by Jamie Harper and made a point to practice our own emergency procedures. The students did a great job. What a great second day of first grade!! Some of our favorite things about today! Keira's favorite thing was "Being able to color in my math book.". Keiar's favorite thing was "Doing math.". Martha's favorite thing was "Finding were the shapes were supposed to go.". Mark's favorite thing was "Playing with puppets in Health.". Liliana's favorite thing was "Making new friends at recess.".
It's the day before the first day of first grade! I am so excited about this new school year. I am excited to get to know all of my new students and families. I have a feeling that this is going to be such a great year. Parents be sure to check back tomorrow for news about our first day back to school!
Well it was our official first day back at work! I got a lot done in the classroom and it is looking really good. I can't wait to see the student's faces when they see the theme. SO EXCITED! I hope they love it.
