Here are a couple of the literacy centers we had today. One was practicing writing spelling words with our brand new smelly markers! The other was building nonsense words. Every 10 minutes the kids clean up and switch to a new center. There are 4 centers in all. We have done centers since the first day of school so these kids are pros!
MATH TIME!!!! Everyone loves math in my class which is so great. Today after our lesson we played a tens frame addition game. The tens frame looks a little complicated but after a bit of practice every one became a master! Turning a math concept that may look a little intimidating into a fun game makes all the fear and pressure just float away. I don't think I hear one child say "this is too hard". Ask your student about the math games that we play. I bet they would love to teach you, this would be a great way to practice their skills.
Today every child got a pumpkin to take home. They were all donated by one of our school business partners. We had a little time after snack so I thought it would be fun to get a little crafty and paint our pumpkins. Above is the pumpkin that Brandon made. Such a jolly pumpkin :)
Today we had a blast getting our hands a little mess. Each table group got their own pumpkin to dig into. We made predictions on how many seeds were inside each pumpkin. We also discussed and decided on different ways to count the seeds.
Today during our intervention time we got into our brand new play-doh and practiced our spelling words. It was so fun! I've never seen such excitement about practicing spelling. We will be sending Thank You notes to NEA and Chevron who funded our project.
Today schools across Alaska participated in an earthquake drill at 10am. The kids did great! We have practiced several times already this year so every one knew just what to do...DUCK, COVER, and HOLD!!! Last year we had a real earthquake during school so we know that we always need to be prepared. One thing that I always do right after an earthquake is fill out the "Did You Feel It?" form on the USGS website. By providing your experience, you are providing information to scientists about the earthquake. Pretty cool right??
Here is the link-----> http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/ Reminder: NO SCHOOL TOMORROW A while back I made a project on Donors Choose for materials that I could use in literacy centers. My idea is to give students meaningful work to do independently while I work with small groups on more targeted skills. I am so thrilled to say that today I received an email stating that my project had been funded by NEA and Chevron. I am so excited and thankful.
Since today was Columbus Day I decided to talk to the students about the oceans. We looked at a globe and a big map and located and named all the oceans. We also talked about the continents a little. We ended the lesson by making our own globes. I thought they would be done with the craft in no time at all but was surprised to find them taking it very seriously and really enjoying it. I love to see these 1st graders happy and learning :)
